The former Albuera, Leyte police chief appeared at the hearing under the sala of Judge Silvino Pampilo Jr. of MRTC Branch 26 for the pretrial of Espinosa’s cases.

The police officer and the other lawmen, who were the witnesses of the prosecution camp against Espinosa and his late father, Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., explained why they were not present during the previous hearing on Nov. 10.

According to Espenido, he was in Hong Kong for a vacation, which was sponsored by President Duterte, after he was conferred with a meritorious award for his participation on the fight against illegal drugs. He also cited flight disruptions due to the recent Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, which was recently held in the country.

Chief Inspector Shevert Alvin Machete and the others meanwhile cited that they have not received the court’s subpoena and even cited the high transportation cost in going to Manila.

Chief Inspector Leo Laraga on the other hand also explained that his duty was transferred to General Santos City, and was also concerned for the transportation cost.

On Oct. 20, Espinosa’s camp entered a not guilty plea before the court in connection to the cases filed against him.

The court meanwhile dismissed the cases concerning the older Espinosa, who was killed, together with another inmate, named Raul Yap, after they allegedly shot it out with lawmen who were reportedly serving a search warrant inside the Leyte Subprovincial Jail in Baybay City early morning of Nov. 5, 2016.
